Life at Longwood, part II

Dear Friends,

Happy 2008! Lots of more art, life in the City and other interesting things.

Life at Longwood has been keeping my busy with the Digital Matrix Commissions Program for 2008 and 2009, amd Material Culture.

Digital Matrix Commissions Program is web based projects commissioned by The Bronx Council on the Arts. Four artist are selected from a a pool by arts professionals and granted $5,000 to create new work that will be archived at www.longwoodcyber.org. Past panelist have included Franklin Sirmans, Miguel Luciano and Yasmin Ramirez. Artists have worked on issues about survival and resistance, gentrification, immigration, race and gender and the underground railroad experience. Past commissioned artsits have included Manuel Acevedo, William Crow, Gaye Chan, Nicolas Dumit Esteves, eteam, Mariam Ghani, Prema Murthy, Jenny Polak, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz,Mary Walling Blackburn. Material Culture, showcases the works of 50 artists working with craft based techniques and material to create artworks addressing issues of gentrification, gender and identity politics, migration, race and globalism. Featured artists include Blanka Amezkua, Keith Anderson, Heather Hart, Donna Huanca, Simone Leigh, Gordon Sasaki, Vered Sivan and others. THe exhibtion will be on view through Thursday, Febraury 7, 2008

Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos is located at 450 Grand Concourse, 2,4,5 trains and BX1, BX19 to 149th Street and Grand Concourse. Open Monday to Saturday, from 10am-6pm. Closed on Sundays and major holidays.....
